Roosevelt County Moves To Electronic Burn Ban Service

When the Roosevelt County residents wish to obtain a burning permit, they will soon be able to do the entire process online.

Commissioners unanimously approved an electronic burn ban service during a special public meeting on Thursday, Feb. 6.

Chair Gordon Oelkers explained that residents have needed to either call 9-1-1 or the sheriff office’s non-emergency number. Fire chiefs in the county requested an electronic service instead. Commissioners said there will be a link on the county’s website for the service. If there are questions, residents should contact DES coordinator Lindsey McNabb at 406653-6246.

Cost of the program will be $1,200 a year. There is an additional $3 fee per permit. Residents will be charged a $5 annual fee for having a burn permit.

The goal is that the service will decrease the amount of unnecessary calls to fire departments. The public will be able to go online to see where prescribed burns are exactly taking place.

Commissioner Robert Toavs said he feels it’s time for Roosevelt County to join other counties and use the technology available.

In other business during the meeting, the county approved the request of four new computers and five new monitors for the Froid library. The funds are in the library’s budget. Commissioners also approved $4,300 for Sheridan Electric to install 15 new LED lights at the McCabe shop. Commissioners said the lack of quality lighting was a safety concern.

Julio Quezada was hired as a custodian at the Roosevelt County Library in Wolf Point.

The appointment of Jason Partridge as a volunteer reserved deputy. He will help cover shifts when needed and when he’s available.
