Wolves Knock Off Poplar, 56-50


Wolf Point’s boys’ basketball team enjoyed excellent shooting in the first half and fought off Poplar, 56-50, to end the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 15.
The three-point shooting of Roper Flaten and Jett Azure led the Wolves to a 22-13 advantage in the first quarter.
Sean Hamilton hit a 17-footer and Richard Campbell connected from three-point range to increase the margin to 30-15 during the second period. The scoring of Walker Burshia, Kaniel Ricker and Chasen Pribbernow helped the Indians to close the gap to 32-24 with under three minutes left in the half.
Hamilton then got hot with three three-pointers in the final two minutes to put the Wolves ahead by a 41-26 halftime margin.
Poplar’s defense held the Wolves scoreless in the third quarter and closed the gap to 41-34. A three-pointer by Blake Lambert was one of Poplar’s highlights of the period.
The Wolves responded with the first three points of the fourth period on a 14-footer by Flaten and a free throw by Campbell. Lambert accounted for five straight points to pull to 46-41 with 4:57 remaining.
Wolf Point answered with a basket off a rebound by Hamilton and a turnaround shot by Zandon Calder. Another basket by Calder and a pair of free throws by Campbell gave the Wolves a comfortable 5445 lead with only 42 seconds left.
Wolf Point’s top scorers were Hamilton with 19, Calder with 12, Campbell with 11 and Flaten with 11 points. Azure had three points.
Lambert led Poplar with 14 points.
Also scoring for the Indians were Dane Moran with eight, Ricker with six, Burshia with six, Keilen Erickson with six, Wilder Bearcub with five, Pribbernow with two and Bostyn Azure with two.
Wolf Point will face Fairview at 3 p.m. to open the District 2B tournament in Glasgow on Wednesday, Feb. 19.
Poplar meets Harlem at 6 p.m. in the first round of the district tourney on Wednesday, Feb. 19.
