After a tight first half, the Bainville Bulldogs emerged with a 57-37 semi-final round win over Savage in the District 2C girls’ basketball tourney on Thursday.

Holding a slim 27-26 halftime lead, the Bulldogs stepped up their defensive play in the third quarter and accounted for the first 13 points of the second half.

Bainville Coach Lance Berndt said about his team’s play in the second half, “We just worked on keeping our defensive intensity.” One change was rotating Elsie Wilson and Hailey Berwick to defend Savage’s hot-shooting Cambry Conradsen. “We just wanted to keep fresh legs on her,” Berndt said.

The Bulldogs got on the right track in the third quarter when Wilson drove for a basket and Addison Hansen scored off a pass from Wilson for a 31-26 lead.

After H. Berwick nailed a three-pointer, the junior guard accounted for a threepoint play for a 37-26 lead. A free throw by H. Berwick and a basket off a rebound by Tally Berwick put the margin at 40-26.

Savage ended the streak when C. Conradsen canned a three-pointer with 1:12 left in the period. A basket off a rebound and a three-pointer at the buzzer by Wilson produced a 45-29 margin at the end of the third quarter.

After C. Conradsen hit another three-pointer midway into the fourth period, T. Berwick scored consecutive baskets for a 55-36 lead with only 2:53 left.

Bainville’s top scorers were Wilson with 17, Hansen with 12 and H. Berwick with 11. Also scoring were Miah Pippenger with eight, T. Berwick with seven and Chandi Johnson with two.

Having three assists each were Hansen and Wilson. Leaders on the boards were Wilson with eight rebounds and T. Berwick with seven.

Savage’s C. Conradsen finished with 18 points and six three-pointers. Taylor Conradsen and KD Lyons had six points each.

The Warriors led 12-10 at the end of the first period and opened the second quarter with a three-pointer by T. Conradsen. The Bulldogs responded with the next 10 points on two baskets by Hansen, a three-pointer by Wilson and a three-point shot by Pippenger for a 2015 lead. Bainville held a 27-26 half-time advantage.
