Poplar’s girls’ basketball team enjoyed a strong start and defeated Wolf Point, 60-29, to clinch a divisional berth during the District 2B tournament in Glasgow Friday.

With the score even at 2-2, the Indians struck for 10 straight points on five points by Braelyn Nordwick, a three-pointer by Mattie Ayers and a steal and layup by Cammie Martell.

Scoring by Wolf Point’s Ma’Kenzie Jackson and Keeley Blount-Henderson closed the margin to 14-7 at the end of the quarter.

The Wolves tallied the opening five points of the second period on a three-pointer and pull-up jumper by Blount-Henderson.

Poplar responded with the game’s next 15 points including two three-pointers by Bailey Dupree, four points by Martell and a three-pointer by Jenaaeya Moran for a 29-12 lead. The Indians went on to hold a 31-17 half-time advantage.

A three-point shot by Journey Gourneau and three free throws by Dupree helped Poplar increase its lead to 42-19 during the third quarter. A basket off a rebound by Makenzie Crawford and a free throw by Ayers ended the third quarter at 45-19.

Poplar opened the fourth period with a three-pointer by Martell and a steal and drive by Ayers.

Top scorers for Poplar with Dupree with 12, Martell with 10 and Nordwick with nine.

Also scoring were Ayers with seven, Gourneau with five, Moran with three, Saydee Archambeault with two, Ashlyn Bull Chief with two and Crawford with two.

Dupree, Nordwick, Martell and Ayers each had three steals in the game.

Jackson led the Wolves with 10 points. Also scoring were Blount-Henderson with five, Ameliya Doney with four, Brenna Blount with three, Marley Moran with three, Karmyn Plain Feather with two and Caitlyn Wilson with two.

Jackson grabbed nine rebounds. Blount-Henderson had three steals.
