Scobey Nips Lustre, 47-43, For District Title


The championship game of the District 3C boys’ basketball tournament was a good one as Scobey fought off Lustre Christian by a 47-43 margin on Saturday night.
The undefeated Spartans entered the fourth quarter with a 33-25, but Lustre didn’t back down in the final period.
A steal and drive by Clay Reddig and a short jumper by Cam Reddig closed the margin to 33-29 to open the fourth quarter. After a three-pointer by Scobey’s Reese Tande at the 5:19 mark, Cam Reddig kept the Lions close with a pair of free throws.
The Lions battled back to 38-36 on a basket by Byron Ewing off a pass from Cam Reddig and then a three-pointer by Cam Reddig with 3:03 remaining.
The Spartans, however, answered right back with a three-pointer by John Carney. Lustre’s Cam Reddig stepped up with the next three points on a free throw and drive to cut the gap to 41-39 with 2:17 left.
After Scobey missed on two shot attempts, Lustre’s Johnslee Pierre sank a free throw to pull the Lions to 4140.
Scobey’s Bram Handran then nailed a 15-footer with 49 seconds to play. After a traveling call against Lustre, Tande hit two free tosses for a 45-40 margin with 18 seconds remaining. Clay Reddig fired in a three-pointer from way out to keep Lustre’s hopes alive at 45-43 with nine seconds left, but Carney iced the game with two free tosses.
Lustre’s top scorers were Cam Reddig with 19 and Clay Reddig with 10 points.
Also scoring for the Lions were Pierre with four, Ewing with four, Prestyn Klatt with four and Diek Olfert with two points.
Leading Scobey were Carney with 20 and Handran with 13 points.
The Spartans led 16-4 at the end of the first quarter and by a 22-17 half-time margin.
In the girls’ championship game, Scobey shocked topranked North Country by a 35-27 final.
Kaytie Aanstad scored 10 and Chloe Handran added seven for the Spartans.
The Eastern C divisional tournament starts March 5 in Sidney.
