Bulldogs Earn Third Place At Divisional Tournament


Bainville’s remarkable girls’ basketball campaign came to an end against Scobey, 55-45, in a challenge game at the Eastern C divisional tournament on Saturday, March 8.
The Bulldogs came away with the third-place trophy, the first time the program has earned a divisional trophy in school history.
With Bainville concentrating on Scobey’s much taller inside game, the Spartans were able to use the threepoint shooting of Avery Wolfe to take a 29-15 lead late in the second period.
After Bainville’s Tally Berwick scored inside, Scobey’s Clare Lekvold hit a three-pointer for a 32-17 margin. Hailey Berwick fired in a three-pointer at the buzzer to cut the margin to 32-20.
The Spartans increased their advantage to 39-22 during the third quarter, but the Bulldogs didn’t let down. Switching to a zone defense, Bainville fought back with the next eight points on two free throws by Elsie Wilson, an inside shot by T. Berwick, a basket off a rebound by Addison Hansen and a steal and drive by H. Berwick.
After Scobey’s Kayla Carney hit two free throws, the Bulldogs closed the third quarter on hoops by T. Berwick, Lila Butikofer and Wilson to trail only 41-36 at the end of the period.
Scobey took control with the first nine points of the fourth period including three-pointers by Camrie Holum and Carney.
Bainville cut the gap to 5042 on two free tosses by H. Berwick and another basket by T. Berwick with 2:30 left, but the Bulldogs couldn’t get any closer.
Bainville’s top scorers were H. Berwick with 13 and T. Berwick with 10 points. Also scoring were Wilson with eight, Hansen with seven, Butikofer with four and Miah Pippenger with three.
Leading Scobey were Wolfe with 12, Holum with 12, Kaytie Aanstad with 12 and Carney with 11 points.
