Lustre Qualifies For Class C State Tournament


Lustre’s boys’ basketball team fell to Scobey, 64-41, in the Eastern C championship game held in Sidney on Saturday, March 8. As the second seed from the Eastern C, the Lions will compete at the Class C state tournament in Butte this week.
In the divisional title game, Scobey gained a 7-0 lead but Lustre fought back to 9-7 on a three-point play by Johnslee Pierre.
The Spartans went out to take a 17-11 lead at the end of the opening quarter. The Lions opened the second period on a good note when Pierre hit a free throw and Byron Ewing made a turnaround shot to close the margin to 17-14.
After Lustre’s Diek Olfert canned a three-pointer to pull to 19-17, the Spartans struck for the game’s next 11 points including seven by John Carney for a 30-17 lead.
Scobey ended the half on baskets by Bram Handran and Kolten Machart for a 3520 margin at intermission.
After the Spartans opened the third quarter with the first nine points, the Lions responded with the next nine on five points by Prestyn Klatt, a 15-footer by Cam Reddig and two free throws by Ewing.
The Lions trailed 46-29 at the end of the third quarter. A highlight of the fourth quarter was consecutive three-pointers by Cam Reddig that closed the gap to 5338 with 4:55 remaining.
Lustre’s top scorers were Klatt with 11 and Ewing with 10 points.
Also scoring were Pierre with nine, Cam Reddig with eight and Olfert with three.
Leading the Spartans were Carney with 21, Handran with 20 and Cooper Axtman with 14 points.
