Nyquist Foundation Winners Announced

The Thomas and Corinne Nyquist Foundation is pleased to announce the winners of its annual student essay contest in collaboration with the Culbertson and Froid libraries and schools.
The prompt this year was: “Students, parents and teachers often complain that some courses taught in high school are unnecessary, while other topics important for students’ futures are woefully missing. If you could design a new course to be taught at your school, what would it be, and how or why would it be beneficial to students’ future?”
The winners were: Culbertson: First place: Leandra Perkins for “Managing Relationships.”
Second place: Jordan Purvis for “Foundations of Financial Independence: Home and Car Buying.”
Froid: First place: Mara Salvevold for “Toolkit for Adulthood.”
Second place tie: Lilly Johnson for “Practical Financial Literacy.” and Taven Jochim for “The Importance of Home Economics in High School Education.”
The judges praised Leandra for her “clear and thoughtful writing,” and Mara for her “engaging writing blending facts and personal experiences.” Further, they found Jordan’s essay “eminently practical,” that Lilly had “clear objectives and good use of quotations,” and that Taven’s essay was “very well organized with well-supported arguments.”
First place essays in each town are awarded $250, and second place $150.
A big thank you to Cheyenne Heller, Froid Library, and Jessica Kierstead, Culbertson Library who coordinate and help advertise the essay contest. Also thank you to Shelly Panasuk, at Culbertson High School, who energizes her students to submit excellent essays.
