Lustre Looks Forward To Another Strong Track Campaign
After placing third at last year’s Class C state boys’ track meet, the Lustre Lions are looking forward to another successful campaign.
The Lions aren’t expected to be as strong due to graduation losses, but Lustre should again provide a good amount of thrills throughout the season.
Johnslee Pierre, a junior, leads the returning group of Lustre’s boys. As a sophomore, Pierre placed second in the long jump, third in the triple jump and third in the 300-meter hurdles at the state meet. He earned the state title in the 300-meter hurdles as a freshman.
Mason Hilkemann is expected to fare well in throwing events for the Lions again this season.
Other state qualifiers back for the Lions are Prestyn Klatt in the 1600 and 3200 and Diek Olfert in the 800. Klatt took seventh in the 3200 at state last season.
The Lions have a total of 18 high school students out for track including nine boys and nine girls.
“We have a big freshman class, especially on the girls’ side,” Coach Lynn Unrau said.
Sophomore Lauryn Holzrichter was a standout for the girls in both hurdle races, long jump and triple jump last season.
Unrau expects freshman Sidney Klatt to be competitive in distance runs this season.
“We won’t be quite as strong in the boys, but we should be building for the next few years,” Unrau said.
