Froid Council Considers Chicken Ordinance

More than a dozen members of the public attended the regular council meeting on March 10 at the community center in Froid.

Mayor Sheri Crain was absent and Gale Strandlund ran the meeting. The rest of the council was in attendance.

The high turnout was due to the possibility of a new ordinance allowing chickens, which was up for discussion. Council member Tyler Harris requested the topic be added to the agenda after requests from local residents.

The current ordinance bans all livestock from areas within town limits. Visitors voiced universal support for the plan to allow a limited number of birds, with a ban on roosters. Supporters cited the high price of eggs on grocery store shelves.

Council members also voiced support for the idea.

Language for a new ordinance is under development and a first reading is expected at the April meeting.

At the meeting, public works director Alan Engelke told the council that he has been doing general maintenance, replacing frozen meters in residences, and doing the last bits of snow and ice removal.

Minutes were approved from the Feb. 10 meeting. as were claims and payroll. Delinquent accounts were reviewed.

The next regular meeting is set for April 14.
