Our History
The Northern Plains Independent weekly newspaper was established May 9, 2019, in Wolf Point, Montana, a small rural community in northeast Montana, by publisher Darla Downs. The Community News in Culbertson was established the same day as the Northern Plains Independent’s sister paper.
Circulation & Deadlines
The Northern Plains Independent is the newspaper of legal record in Roosevelt County. The total circulation averages about 1,500 papers each week. The Independent is published once aweek and delivered primarily by U.S. mail and sold on newsstands around the county. The deadline to get news into the coming edition is 5 p.m. Mondays. The deadline for placing advertisements is 9 a.m. on Tuesdays, and the newspaper goes to press Tuesday at 1 p.m. It is labeled Wednesday morning and mailed before 3 p.m. Delivery time ranges from next day in Wolf Point to several weeks in some parts of the United States.
The Community News is based in Culbertson. The total circulation averages about 500 papers per week. The Community News is published once a week and delivered primarily by U.S. mail and sold on newsstands around eastern Roosevelt County. The deadline to get news into the coming edition is 5 p.m. Mondays. The deadline for placing advertisements is 9 a.m. on Tuesdays, and the newspaper goes to press Tuesday at 11 a.m. It is labeled Wednesday morning and mailed before 3 p.m. Delivery time ranges from next day in Culbertson to several weeks in some parts of the United States.
Subscription Rates
Print subscription rates for the Northern Plains Independent for one year are: $45 for residents of any 592- zip code, $56 for residents of Montana, and $61 for out-of-state residents. To subscribe, mail us a check in the correct amount and your address or call 406-653-2775 with credit card information. In addition to offering print edition subscriptions, we also offer on-line services and an e-edition. Every print subscriber can set up an e-account with us and obtain a free password to access our e-edition. We also offer an online-only subscription for $45 so you don’t have to wait for the post office to deliver your Independent anymore.
Print subscription rates for the Community News for one year are: $39 for residents of any 592-zip code, $49 for residents of Montana, and $55 for out-of-state residents. To subscribe, mail usa check in the correct amount and your address. In addition to offering print edition subscriptions, we also offer on-line services and an e-edition. Every print subscriber can set up an e-account with us and obtain a free password to access our e-edition. The cost of an online-only subscription is $39.
Advertising Rates
Classified advertising- $8 for the first 20 words, then 20 cents per word.Display advertising- The per-column-inch cost is $7.75 in the Northern Plains Independent and$6.50 in the Community News. Prepayments via cash or credit card are required unless a credit arrangement has been approved.Legal Advertising- The cost per folio on the first insertion is $15 and $13 on the second and subsequent insertions for all private and commercial entities.
Other Services
The Northern Plains Independent also runs a commercial print shop, providing professional letterhead, business cards, envelopes and business forms for customers. The Independent’s professional staff also takes passport pictures.

About Wolf Point
Wolf Point is the county seat of Roosevelt County and is the largest city in the county, boasting a population of 3,000 residents. Located in the southwest corner of Roosevelt County in the historic Missouri River Valley, Wolf Point is the trade center for northeast Montana. Wolf Point is located about 90 miles west of the North Dakota border and 50 miles south of the Canadian border.
Wolf Point is on the main line of the Burlington Northern Railroad and is served by both Amtrak and Cape Air. U.S. Highway 2 passes through Wolf Point providing an east-west route and Montana Highway 13 comes from the south across the Missouri River and continues north to the Canadian border.
