Norman Haase, 81, of Williston, N.D., died at CHI St. Alexius Hospital in Williston early Thursday morning, April 11, 2024. His funeral service was held Tuesday, April 23, at the Liberty Evangelical Free Church in Williston. Pastor Brian Martin officiated. Interment in Riverview Cemetery followed. June Barbara Young Carlson, 86, of Medicine Lake died March 30, 2024, in Missoula. She was born July 27, 1937, in Williston, N.D., to Robert and Barbara Young of Froid. She graduated from Froid High School and attended business school in Minnesota the following fall. She met Lloyd Carlson at her grandparents’ house. He was there drilling a water well. They married March 8, 1957, at the Union Congregational Church. They were the first couple married in the new church. They built a house on Main Street in Medicine Lake and raised their family there. She was a stay-at-home housewife raising four children. She did the business books for their water well business as well as her Thursday night bowling league.

Sylvester Nicholas Haus, 85, of Culbertson, Mont., formerly of Battle Lake, Minn., passed away peacefully with family by his side on March 8, 2024, at the Roosevelt Medical Center in Culbertson. Sylvester (who also went by Nick) was born on Aug. 25, 1938, to Leo Haus and Helen Haugee (Pelzl), in Hankinson, N.D. As a child, his family primarily lived in Minnesota and, at the age of eight, he and his three younger siblings were put into foster care at the St. Cloud Catholic Children’s Home. When he was 11, Sylvester continued his foster care with Archie and Veronica Lindenfelser of Monticello, Minn., and worked on their dairy farm until he was 22. In 1960, he married Helen Goeb of Monticello, Minn., and together they raised seven children: Jeffrey Haus, Mark Haus, Christopher Haus, Bruce Haus, Sandra Fimon, Archie Haus and Leandra Jackson. After getting married, they lived in Elk River, Minn., and in 1973 moved to Mill Creek, Mont., to live close to his older brother, Larry Haus. They returned to Minnesota in 1985 and resided in Battle Lake. After his retirement, he lived on Sugar Lake in Glen, Minn., and at age 78 moved to Forest Lake, Minn. He spent the last three years of his life in Culbertson, Mont. At a young age, Sylvester learned the importance of putting in a hard day’s work and held a variety of laborious occupations. He worked as a dairy farmer, iron worker, ammunition manufacturer, miner, logger, construction worker and welder. His immense hands and aching back reflected the strenuous and hard work he put in. Sylvester had a passion for the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was an excellent marksman with both a gun and bow and enjoyed processing and preparing wild game. The camaraderie of hunting and fishing with family and friends is what Sylvester enjoyed the most. He was a great storyteller with a dry sense of humor and, over a glass of brandy, would often reminisce about his childhood adventures, hunting and fishing in the mountains, going to dances with Helen when he was young and all the different kinds of things he made with tullibee (whitefish). Playing cards was something he also enjoyed, especially pinochle and cribbage; and, if you were his partner and played the wrong card, he made sure you knew. May he rest in peace knowing that he leaves behind a wealth of memories that will be treasured for generations. He was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings, Marge, Bernice, Larry, Marie, Joe and Louise; nephew and niece, Tom Haus and Karen Hancock; and grandson, Jeremy Davis. Sylvester is survived by those who knew and loved him including his children, Jeffrey Haus, Mark (Kelly) Haus, Christopher (Holly) Haus, Bruce (Kelly Wyss) Haus, Sandra (Keith) Fimon, Archie (Jessi) Haus and Leandra (Joe) Jackson; and his sibling, Kenny. He is also survived by 18 wonderful grandchildren, 24 adorable great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, family and friends. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Friday, April 19, 2024, at the Church of Saint Peter, 1250 South Shore Drive, Forest Lake, Minn. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the church. A luncheon will follow at the church. Irene Josephine Davidson was born on March 3, 1934, in Froid, Mont., to Elizabeth “Beeb” and Helmer Hanson. She peacefully passed away March 5, 2024, in Culbertson, Mont. Irene's journey began in Froid, where she attended school and embraced a strong work ethic from a young age. She was confirmed in the Froid Lutheran Church, where she found solace and community. In August 1951, Irene married Vernie L. Davidson in Seattle, Wash., marking the beginning of a lifelong partnership filled with love and shared adventures. Together, they built a life and raised their family across various communities in Montana and Washington before finally settling in Callaway, Minn., where they retired after many years of hard work. Their enduring love and commitment saw them through almost 60 years of marriage. Throughout her life, Irene was known for her unwavering dedication to her family and her community. She was a beloved figure in Callaway, where she worked in various businesses, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew her. Irene's resourcefulness and can-do attitude were evident in every aspect of her life. Whether she was cooking her famous meals, baking, tending to her garden, birdwatching or cutting a rug on the dance floor as a polka partner, Irene approached everything with enthusiasm and determination. In her later years, she found joy in the simple pleasures of life, spending countless hours immersed in the pages of her favorite books. Irene is survived by her loving children, Sheri (Bruce) Crain of Froid, Mont., Carol (David) Foltz of Detroit Lakes, Minn., Demcy (Sandi) Davidson of Callaway, Minn., and LaDonna (Brady) Finnicum of Velva, N.D.; along with 16 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Vernie; her children, Clay A. Davidson, Tammy Wangerin, and infants David and Kelly; her parents, Helmer L. Hanson and Beeb Herling; and her siblings, Ray Hanson, Randy Hanson, Darlene Berg, Joyce Boos, Mervin “Shorty” Hanson and Kae Spotted Bull; and all of her brothersand sisters-in-law and many nephews and nieces. Irene's legacy of love, resilience and kindness will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her. Mary Helen Tropila, 89, died Feb. 25, 2024, at Great Falls Clinic Hospital in Great Falls. She was born April 28, 1934, in Medicine Lake to Russell and Helen Evans. She graduated from Medicine Lake High School in 1952 and continued to Kinman Business University in Spokane, Washington, earning her secretarial degree. She and Joseph Tropila were united in marriage April 27, 1957, at St. Patrick Church in Medicine Lake. They made their home in Great Falls. She enjoyed Saturday evening Mass at St. Ann’s Cathedral, Gonzaga basketball, Seattle Mariners baseball, time with her children and Nestle milk chocolate chips — the small bag. Surviving are children, Mike, Cathy MacDonald, Mitch and Cecile Sorensen; sister, Joan Ator; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband; brother, Robert Evans; and sister, Jean Wirth. Graveside services were held Wednesday, March 13, at noon at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Great Falls.

Jameson Jeffrey Egemo, 24, of Buffalo, S.D., formerly of Bainville, died Sunday, Feb. 25, 2024, at Sanford Health Hospital in Bismarck, N.D. He was born July 24, 1999, to Michelle Holm Egemo and Jeffrey Owen Egemo in Williston, N.D. He was raised by his mother, Michelle Holm Horob, and his bonus dad, Jay Horob on the family farm northeast of Bainville. He has two brothers, Joseph Horob and Angelo Lee Schrumpf; five sisters, Michaela Hartman, Jessica Horob, Christina Holm, Stephanie Egemo and Jaymie Horob. He attended Bainville School where he enjoyed playing basketball and football. The school co-opt with Culbertson until his senior year when the boys started the football program for Bainville School. He was also a member of FFA. He participated in the Missoula Children’s Theatre. He graduated in 2017 from Bainville School. He enjoyed hanging out with his friends, playing basketball, football, hunting, boating, fishing and camping. He was always willing to help when needed. He enjoyed helping the neighbors work cattle or anything else they needed. Growing up, he enjoyed visiting with his aunts, uncles and cousins. He was always willing to help Grandma Musette Horob with yard work and gardening. His greatest pastime was hanging out with his best friend, Brennen, coyote hunting and fishing. Lorena Wilma Hekkel, 97, of Culbertson died Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2024, at the Roosevelt Memorial Nursing Home in Culbertson. She was born Aug. 4, 1926, to Dan and Ella (Krueger) Schledewitz near Froid. She was baptized and confirmed a Lutheran and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Culbertson. After graduation Culbertson High School in 1944, she worked as a telephone operator until her marriage to John “Pete” Hekkel on Sept. 29, 1946. To this union, two children were born, Perry and Marcia. She had one of the best smiles, a loving and caring personality and a great sense of humor. She was happiest when surrounded by friends and family drinking coffee, visiting and playing cards.
