Alice Ann (Wall) Unger passed away and into the presence of her Lord and Savior Jesus on the morning of Dec. 16, 2024.
Alice was born on Oct. 13, 1928, to John Wall and Katharina (Fast) Wall at the family farmhouse in Lustre, Mont. Alice attended Center Bell School through eighth grade and went on to attend Glasgow High School with her cousin Erma. Alice graduated high school in 1945 and went back to help her parents on the family farm in Lustre.
In 1947, Alice met Fritz Unger at a wedding and the two quickly fell in love, marrying on June 1, 1948. Alice and Fritz ultimately settled back on her family’s farm in Lustre where they raised their family and Alice cooked, baked, tended a garden and was Fritz’s right hand for every big and small job on the farm. Including the time she used a string to drive a truck from the field back home to the yard.
In 2003, Fritz and Alice sold the farm and retired to Billings. Never one to be idle, Alice proudly earned her first paycheck cleaning apartments in Billings, a job she continued well into her 80s.
Alice loved to sew, crochet, knit, and embroider. She was skilled at sewing and even made her own patterns. She taught all four of her kids and all 12 of her grandchildren how to embroider and this was her way of keeping them busy! Alice also made an afghan for every grandchild for their high school graduation. She continued creating, crocheting blankets for her great-great-grandchildren late in her life. In her retirement, Alice made countless baby caps and comfort shawls that she donated to the Billings Clinic Hospital. Alice also gave of her time by volunteering at the hospital for 10 years, alongside Fritz.
Above all, Alice was known for her curiosity, “You don’t know if you don’t ask” as she always said. Alice loved her family and loved getting to visit with her many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and even great-great-grandchildren so she could ask them all those questions she was curious about.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Fritz; her parents; her brothers, Albert and Ray; her sister, Helen; her grandson, Darin Brown; and her great-grandson, Blake Reddig.
Those who will miss Alice are her children: Evonne (Dennis) Brown, Bruce Unger, Keith (Joan) Unger and Karen (Rich) Smith; grandchildren: Bob (Yvonne) Brown, Sarah Brown, Jason (Stephanie) Brown, Andy (Joy) Unger, Jennifer Unger, Chris (Jess) Unger, Luke (Jennifer) Unger, Rochelle Unger, Rebecca (Randy) Reddig, Anya Smith, Emily Smith and Jenna Smith; 25 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held in the chapel at the Cremation & Funeral Gallery in Billings at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 2, 2025. Memorial gifts can be given to: El Roi Haiti, PO Box 719, Wolf Point, MT 59201 (elroihaiti. com) and/or Lustre Christian High School, 4 Lustre High Cir, Lustre, MT 59225 (lustrechristian. org).
