Red Hawks Down Plentywood, 44-42


The Froid/Lake Red Hawks pulled off a 44-42 upset victory over Plentywood during the semi-final round of the District 2C girls’ basketball tournament on Thursday night.
The Red Hawks were ahead by only a 23-20 margin early in the third quarter but then struck for the game’s next 12 points. A free throw by Brooklynn Nordwick, a 17-footer by Addison Elvsaas and a free throw by Mara Salvevold started the streak.
Free tosses by Salvevold and B. Nordwick extended the margin to 30-20. Salvevold then drove in for a hoop to put the Red Hawks up 32-20 with 3:18 left in the quarter. B. Nordwick added three more free throws for a 35-20 advantage.
Free throws by Lei Kittleson and a three-pointer by Jaimison Soderquist got Plentywood back on the right track. The third quarter ended with the Red Hawks up by a 36-27 margin.
After Salvevold opened the fourth quarter with a free throw, Plentywood struck for the next 10 points including three-pointers by April Mc-Cabe and Mallory Tommerup for a 37-37 deadlock with 4:34 remaining.
The Red Hawks were able to regain the lead on two free throws by Isabelle Nordwick, but a free throw by Tommerup cut the margin to 39-38 with 2:02 left. Tommerup then hit another free toss for a 39-39 deadlock with 30 seconds remaining. After a steal, Salvevold hit a pair of free throws with 21 seconds remaining for a 4139 lead. Elvsaas then took a charge, and Salvevold added a free throw for a 42-39 margin with 12 seconds left. The lead became 44-39 on two clutch free throws by I. Nordwick with seven seconds to play.
The Wildcats kept their hopes alive on three free throws by Tommerup for a 44-42 game with 2.6 seconds left. Tommerup then came up with a steal but missed a potential game-tying shot as time expired.
Reaching double figures for Froid/Lake were I. Nordwick with 15, Salvevold with 13 and B. Nordwick with 10 points. Avery Johnson, Elvsaas and Keira Stentoft added two points each.
Tommerup and McCabe scored 14 points each for Plentywood.
