Roosevelt County Library Offers Literacy Programs
Roosevelt County Library director Janet Livingston told the Northern Plains Independent that the summer reading program is nearly over. At press time, two weeks remain for participants to avail themselves of the group literacy effort. The remaining two packets are available online at the library’s website.
Beginning in September, the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program will be launching. The program is designed to improve and increase childhood literacy by marking the number of books read by little ones prior to starting school.
Livingston stressed the importance of reading to and with children, especially during a period of limited educational access due to the COVID-19 pandemic. She said parents, guardians, older siblings and relatives are invited to read to kids in their care, noting book titles so that readers can mark their progress. She also said that daycare professionals who read to children count toward to the 1,000 titles.
“We will be marking progress by giving prizes to kids when the reach milestones like 100 books or 200 books,” said Livingston.
More information on these and other programs can be found at rooseveltcountylibrary.org.
Livingston added that sanitization and other COVID-19 related efforts remain in effect. Patrons are asked to wear masks and use hand sanitizer provided by the library. Access to the building is limited to 30 per day, including computer use.
Livingston said some patrons have been trying to leave and come back on the same day, which is not permitted, so visitors must schedule their library time accordingly.
