Culbertson Football Players Looking Forward To Season

Community News Staff With the goal of making a return trip to the Class C eight-man football state playoffs, the Culbertson Cowboys are working hard in their pre-season practices.

The program includes 18 players with the two seniors being Michael Peterson and Hunter Lucas.

Culbertson is anticipated to have a strong running attack with sophomore tailback Kobe Nickoloff and sophomore fullback Justice Bengochea leading the way.

“We should have a good running game with the two sophomores and the rest cycling in the backfield,” coach Brian Manning said.

The coach adds that sophomore quarterback Payton Perkins has a strong arm and should be quite a threat offensively. Perkins saw a good amount of playing time at the end of last season.

Another returning starter for the Cowboys is junior end Canaan Boyd.

Manning said a team's weakness is its inexperience at this point of the season. He is looking forward to his first season as the squad's head coach.

“I will come here every day and work hard,” Manning said. “I want to get the kids to play at their full potential.”

He expects defending state champion Fairview and Scobey to be the top teams in the area.

The Cowboys open their season against MonDak in Grenora, N.D., on Aug. 28.
