Culbertson Volleyball Begins

Community News Staff The Culbertson Cowgirls appear ready to take a step up in the district volleyball standings this season.

Returning starters for Culbertson include seniors Mc-Kinsey Justice at middle blocker, Cody Larsen at outside hitter, libero Anissa Bengochea and hitter Kylie Portra.

Culbertson's squad features 16 players including four freshmen.

“It's a real solid number,” Culbertson coach Tiffany Nielsen said.

The coach is pleased of how hard the girls worked during the summer during open gyms and in the weight room.

“We're really focusing on defense,” Nielsen said. “We're working hard on being super confident with our swings.”

A strong part for the Cowgirls should include a sophomore class that features Makena Hauge, Koree Marchwick and Kennedy Kempton.

“They've been working hard,” Nielsen said of the entire Culbertson squad. “They have good attitudes and good hearts.”

Top teams in the league are expected to include Plentywood, Froid/Lake, Scobey, Richey/Lambert and Fairview.

“MonDak and North Country will also be strong,” Nielsen said. “We will have a tough big district again.”

Culbertson is scheduled to host the district tournament this year.

Nielsen said practices have been going well while maintaining the social distancing guidelines.

“It takes some getting used to, wearing a mask while coaching,” Nielsen said. “In a small school, it's easier to practice in pods. We've really followed the guidelines.”

The Cowgirls will open their season in Bainville on Aug. 29.
