Chanté Project Offers Tribal Leader Videos Online
YouTube Channel Features Dozens Of Talks
Chanté Project staff are offering a series of interviews and talks with tribal leaders online via a YouTube channel, according to project director Marty Reum.
The channel features nearly 50 clips ranging from under two minutes to 29 minutes. Interviewees and speakers include Kenny Shields talking about subjects like “the story of rock,” “riverside church” and Cuthead band campsite.”
Dr. James E. Shanley gave a 12minute interview. More interviewees include Poplar’s Montana Wilson, Melvin “Terry” Rattling Thunder Sr., Megan Gourneau, Carlolyn Welch, Bary Bighorn Sr., Estelle Bighorn, Sylvia Long Knife, Alexander Smith, Ernie Bighorn, Terrance Gourneau, Barbara Birdsbill, Joe McGeshick, Tote GreyHawk, Justiss Firemoon, Carrie Manning, Stacie Fourstar, Cody Eagleman, Cheyenne Foote, Terry and Robert McAnally, Paula Spotted Bird, Adriann Ricker, Christian Curtis, Britney Spotted Bird and Braid Grainger.
Lois Red Elk gave 12 short talks with stories titled Once Upon a Wolf, River Fog, Grandma’s Bobcat Kittens and others.
Wayne Martel spoke about the history of the Fort Peck Reservation and Nakoa HeavyRunner gave a talk about digital storytelling.
Reum told the Northern Plains Independent that the videos were the brainchild of Roxann Smith, Reum and former program director Carly Hosford-Israel, “We had classrooms asking for access to leaders,” said Reum. “We were already thinking about ways to contribute during the pandemic.”
Production for the video channel project is being handled by Scott Smoker and the team at Rezkast Radio.
The Chanté Project is an offshoot of Fort Peck Community College. The group’s mission is to prepare middle and high school students on the Fort Peck Reservation for healthy, productive and fulfilling adult lives.
