After School Offerings To Follow District Lead

Bigger Sky Kids in Wolf Point has updated their after-school offerings to stay in line with Wolf Point School District attendance schedules. BSK sponsors after-school, art-based instruction and provides a safe place for children to participate in program activities.

According to program director Barbara Olson, scheduled program offerings are moving forward with some adjustments due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Regular art exploration activities will be scheduled as follows: Wolf Point School District students attending Mondays and Tuesdays will be welcomed for after-school programming at BSK on Tuesdays. Students on a Wednesday/Thursday schedule will be welcomed on Thursdays. Activities begin after school lets out at approximately 4:15 p.m. Masks and hand sanitizer will be provided.

A class titled “Nakoda Dance, Stories and Their History” will focus on several Native American dances and the stories, protocols and history that accompany them. Winona Runsabove will serve as lead teacher. She is recognized as a carrier of the tradition by the Fort Peck Tribes. Her father Bill Runsabove was a well-known singer, drummer and composer who performed at Carnegie Hall and sang at the Clinton and Obama inaugurations. He was a lifelong advocate for practicing traditional Native American performance. He taught his daughter to dance from an early age. Runsabove will be assisted by Wayne Eagle Boy, a senior at Wolf Point High School. The class will begin sometime in early November.

Artist-in-community Cathryn McIntyre will be back for 2020 to teach studio mastery with oil paints for intermediate artists. Olson said enrollment for McIntyre’s class is now limited to former students who have already taken the introductory portion.

Northside teacher Andrew Tumonong is planning to return to teach a popular dance class from the Philippines. Class times are still be formalized.

Currently, class sizes and offerings linked to the number of adult volunteers available for classes and activities. Adult volunteers are being sought.
