Poplar Girls Battle Fairview In Volleyball Action

A remarkable comeback in the second set was the highlight for Poplar during its non-conference volleyball match against Fairview on Tuesday night.

The Indians dropped the match by a 16-25, 25-23, 19-25, 13-25, final.

In the second set, Poplar trailed by a 23-14 margin until a kill by Keandra Martell and aces by Morgen Nordwick started a comeback for the home team.

With Nordwick doing the serving, the Indians accounted for the final 11 points of the set for a 25-23 victory. A block by junior Kylie Gourneau ended the set.

Tied at one-set each, the third set was close as a kill by Macey Dionne pulled Poplar to 11-10.

Fairview broke away for a 21-13 advantage on the hitting of Jadyn Gackle and Emily Sundheim.

After a tip by Poplar’s Gourneau, Fairview responded with a block by Piper Hurley and a spike by Gackle for a 23-15 lead. The Indians battled to get as close as 24-19 before Fairview scored on a kill by Sundheim.

In the fourth set, Fairview used the serving of Megan Asbeck to register a quick 6-2 lead. Poplar battled back to earn a 9-7 advantage thanks to the solid net play of Dionne and powerful serving of Dusti Marottek.

The Indians stayed close until Fairview gained a 21-11 lead on the serving of Dani Berry. The Warriors won the fourth set 25-13 with a serve by Asbeck ending the match.
