Native American Week was a big hit for the Wolf Point Junior/Senior High School.

My appreciation goes to high school principal Kim Hanks. If it was not for her taking a chance on me to be the new Native American studies teacher, I wouldn’t be in the position to help create opportunities for the students.

It is no secret that she was my former teacher, coach and role model when I went to Wolf Point High School. Hanks and I do not have to spend years creating a bond because we already have a great relationship working together to implement big things for Wolf Point High School. She fully supports the ideas that will create opportunities for the students that will not only benefit the school and community, but will pave the way for other schools to implement great things that are in the works and are yet to come.

The best part about it is having a principal who is non-indigenous but is working with me as an indigenous person. When were able to work together and create opportunities for our school and community, it speaks volumes.

I have to give a shout out to Greg Gourneau also for supporting the Native American Week activities. I know Greg Gourneau’s family personally since I grew up with some of them and know they come from a good family background. They too want the best for our school and community, making it easier to have two supportive principals is a plus.

Presenters for the Native American Week activities included Michael Spears, Gary Farmer, Jalen Atchico, Jonnie Huerta, Jonnie Lee Bearcub Stiffarm and Lance Fourstar. If it was not for all their hard work, this would not be possible. All the credit goes to them and the students. All I did as the Native American studies teacher was facilitate it, which is my duty.

I have high hopes for Wolf Point Junior/Senior High School. We have wonderful people in our community, such as Mike Turcotte and Marty Reum, creating beautiful things for our school and community.

The students absolutely loved this week, and we as a team look forward to creating beautiful opportunities for the students, which it’s all about.
