Welch Steps Up To Teach NAS
Tressa Welch was born and raised in Wolf Point. The former state champion tennis player is coaching seventh grade girls basketball this year on top of teaching Native American Studies at the junior high and high school. She was a substitute teacher for the district from 2009-2014 and has worked as a behavioral intervention specialist at Northside School.
Welch said her renewed interest in teaching was sparked by former junior high principal John Wetsit, who invited her to present during Native American Week last year. From there, she said, the timing was just right.
“It was the perfect opening and opportunity,” said Welch.
Welch is currently pursuing a degree in Native American Studies at Fort Peck Community College, When not working, she said she enjoys being out on the land, looking for traditional medicines and participating in sweat lodge ceremonies locally and with members of other tribes.
