First Snow Of Season Arrives In Roosevelt County
If you had Thursday, Oct. 15, for your office pool regarding the first day of seeing snow in Wolf Point, you were the “lucky” winner.
Cory Mottice, lead meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Glasgow, said there were traces of snow reported throughout the area on Thursday morning.
“It was pretty much all of northeastern Montana,” he said.
There was no measurable snow, but a dusting was reported in north Valley County. Measurable snow is described as at least 1/10th of an inch. The first measurable snow fall during 2019 in Glasgow came on Oct. 25.
The earliest snow ever in the Glasgow area came on Sept. 13 in 1970. The latest first snowfall was Dec. 24 in 1923.
Mottice said on Friday morning, Oct. 16, that between 2 to 4 inches of snow was anticipated in Valley, Daniels and Sheridan counties by Saturday, Oct. 17.
Forecast for most of this week include potential moisture and highs in the 40s.
Mottice expects high tem- peratures to remain in the 40s throughout next weekend.
The forecast for northeastern Montana this year includes cooler than average temperatures and being wetter than normal.
“With La Nina well established and expected to persist through the upcoming 2020 winter season, we anticipate the typical, cooler, wetter North, and warmer, drier South, as the most likely outcome of winter weather that the U.S. will experience this year,” Mike Halpert, deputy director of NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, said in the press release.
