Cold Temps, Snowfall Set Area Records

National Weather Service Glasgow Meteorologist Brandon Bigelbach told the Northern Plains Independent that area records were set for snowfall, coldest daily highs and recorded lows beginning Oct. 19.

Wolf Point set a new oneday snowfall record with 0.3 inches on Oct. 19, beating trace amounts recorded as far back as 1905, and Oct. 22 with 5 inches. The previous record for Oct. 22 was set in 1984. According to Bigelbach, this puts Wolf Point in the running for the snowiest October on record: “Wolf Point stands at second all time snowiest for October at 5.8” [inches] so far,” he said. “The record of 7 inches was set in 1985.”

Culbertson currently ranks as receiving the 24th highest overall snowfall for October.

Wolf Point experienced coldest daily high temperatures of 24 degrees Oct. 23, 22 degrees Oct. 24 and 23 degrees Oct. 25. The previous records were set in 2002 and 1976 respectively.

Culbertson set a coldest daily high record Oct. 23 with 23 degrees, again Oct. 24 with 22 degrees and Oct. 25 with 22 degrees. Previous coldest highs for those days in Culbertson were set in 2002, 1942 and 1957 respectively.

Low temperature records were set in Wolf Point Oct. 23 (0 degrees) and Oct. 26 (-4 degrees at the airport), beating out lows of 7 degrees in 2002 and 10 degrees in 1991 for the aforementioned dates.

Culbertson broke low temperature records Oct. 23 with 0 degrees and Oct. 26 with -8 degrees recorded at the airport. Previous records for Oct. 23 and 26 were set in 1981 and 1957.

Glasgow is currently experiencing its third all-time snowiest October with 8.6 inches snowfall recorded thus far, which is bested by 11.5 inches in 1924 and 13.6 inches in 2008.
