Cowgirls Feature Young Squad Entering Basketball Season
The Culbertson Cowgirls don’t have much experience, but they have enough ability to be competitive in District 2C girls basketball contests this season.
“There’s a lot of talent there,” Culbertson coach Valli Hauge said. “They just have to get their confidence with the varsity.”
Returning starter for the Cowgirls is Makena Hauge, who was an All-Conference selection last season as a freshman.
Other players with some varsity experience include sophomore Megan Granbois, sophomore Alicyn Ator and sophomore Koree Marchwick. Perla Burciagia, a 5-10 sophomore, saw limited varsity action last year. The Cowgirls qualified for the divisional tournament last year.
The squad doesn’t have any seniors, and Autumn Bergum is the team’s lone junior. The program currently has 10 players, but a few eighth-graders will be added for JV games.
“We’re very young,” Coach Hauge said.
Strengths for the team should be a strong sophomore class featuring seven players.
As far as height, the Cowgirls will rely at Hauge and Granbois each at 5-11.
With good athletic ability, Culbertson is expected to play an up-tempo game.
“We should have the speed that we can,” Coach Hauge said.
The coach expects Plentywood and Froid/Lake to be at the top of the league standings.
Culbertson opens its season at home against Froid/ Lake on Saturday, Jan. 2.
