Some Restrictions Still In Effect For Marijuana Use
Although the recreational use of marijuana became legal in Montana on Friday, Jan. 1, Wolf Point Chief of Police Jeff Harada reminds the public that some restrictions still apply regarding the product.
For one, individuals over the age of 21 are allowed to possess only up to 1 ounce of marijuana under the law. It may not be more than 8 grams in concentrated form or “any type of marijuana product consisting wholly or in part of the resin extracted from any part of the marijuana plant.” The use of recreational marijuana in Montana was approved through ballot initiatives during November.
“I’ve always believed that alcohol was the biggest gateway drug,” Harada said. “We usually find people are intoxicated when they try meth.”
Other restrictions include that people can grow up to four mature marijuana plants and four seedlings at only a private residence, amounts of marijuana produced more than 1 ounce must be kept in a locked space and can’t be visible from a public place, a person must own the residence where the plants are being cultivated or obtain written permission from the owner, and the private residence is not shared, rented or leased by an adult-use provider.
Harada notes that individual can’t operate a vehicle while under the influence of marijuana and that smoking or consuming marijuana products in public spaces isn’t permitted.
Dispensaries and providers can’t apply for a marijuana business license until October and then won’t be able to sell the product commercially until January of 2022.
