Area Squads Finally Start Basketball Seasons During COVID Challenges
Froid/Lake Girls Post 43-30 Victory Over Culbertson Team
The Froid/Lake girls’ basketball squad got rolling in the third quarter and scored a season-opening 43-30 victory in Culbertson on Saturday, Jan. 2.
Ahead 19-12 at the half, the Red Hawks enjoyed a good start to the third quarter when Baylee Davidson accounted for a steal and layup. After Culbertson’s Meghan Granbois scored, Sydney Dethman and Granbois exchanged hoops for a 23-16 game.
The Red Hawks then gained control with the next 10 points as Dethman led the attack. The 6-2 senior accounted for a three-point play, a three-point shot and an inside hoop during the streak. Dasani Nesbit added a basket for a 33-16 advantage.
The Cowgirls ended the quarter with a three-pointer by Destiney Thompson and a basket by Koree Marchwick to pull to 33-21.
Froid/Lake ran off the opening six points of the fourth period on two shots by Dethman and a drive by Nesbit.
Culbertson came as close as 41-28 when Makena Hauge scored on a steal and layup with 1:33 remaining.
Dethman finished with 25 points to lead the Red Hawks. Nesbit accoutned for nine points. Carolyne Christoffersen added seven and Davidson scored a basket.
Leading the Cowgirls were Hauge with 11, Thompson with eight and Granbois with five. Marchwick had two points.
The scoring of Christoffersen and a three-point play by Nesbit led the Red Hawks to a quick 6-2 lead. A fastbreak basket by Thompson cut the gap to 6-4 at the end of the opening quarter.
Four points each by Dethman and Christoffersen increased Froid/Lake’s lead to 16-6 in the second quarter.
After Hauge and Dethman exchanged three-pointers, the Cowgirls fought back to trail 19-12 at the half.
Froid/Lake will host Plentywood on Thursday, Jan. 7, and Fairview on Saturday, Jan. 9, in Medicine Lake.
The Cowgirls will face Circle at home on Saturday, Jan. 9.
