Cowgirls Drop Contest to Wildcats
Culbertson’s girls’ basketball squad struggled early and ended up losing to Circle, 47-27, in District 2C action on Saturday, Jan. 9.
The Cowgirls stayed with Circle early as baskets by Destiney Thompson and Megan Granbois produced a 4-4 deadlock.
Circle accounted for the last six points of the quarter on a three-pointer by Alexis Moline and three points by Sierra Nagle.
The Wildcats then ran off the first eight points of the second quarter for an 18-4 advantage. Nagle, a junior, tallied four of the points.
Culbertson’s Makena Hauge ended Circle’s scoring streak when the sophomore connected on a 16-footer with 1:40 left in the half. Circle went on to grab a 22-6 advantage at intermission.
The Cowgirls accounted for four of the first eight points of the second half on hoops by Hauge and Perla Burciaga.
A three-pointer by Granbois closed the margin to 28-13 with 4:31 left in the quarter. The Wildcats grabbed a 33-13 lead, but Culbertson scored the last three points of the period on a free throw by Koree Marchwick and a pull-up jumper by Hauge.
Ahead 33-16, Circle scored eight of the first 10 points of the fourth quarter.
Hauge led the Cowgirls with 12 points. Also scoring were Granbois with five, Marchwick with four, Thompson with four and Burciaga with two.
