Red Hawks Fall Just Short During Battle Against Top-Ranked Scobey
Two Eastern C boys’ basketball powerhouses took to the court in Scobey on Thursday, Jan 21, and delivered an outstanding game as topranked Scobey edged Froid/ Lake, 57-54.
The Red Hawks, who went toe-to-toe with the defending state co-champions for the distance, fell behind 52-43 with 1:22 left, but a threepoint play by Javonne Nesbit got Froid/Lake back on the right track.
The free-throw shooting of Colt Miller pulled the Red Hawks to 54-50 with 46 seconds remaining. The Red Hawks got two points closer, 54-52, on free throws by Nesbit with 35 seconds left. After a free throw by Scobey’s Parker Cromwell, Froid/Lake’s Nesbit connected on two more free tosses to cut the gap to 55-54 with 18 seconds remaining.
The Spartans were able to hold off Froid/Lake as Aidan Fishell hit two free throws with 17 seconds left, but then Scobey’s defense prevented the Red Hawks from hitting a shot attempt during the final seconds.
Froid/Lake opened the contest with the first seven points on an inside shot by C. Miller and five points by Tyler Wivholm.
Four straight points by C. Miller and a pair of free tosses by Mason Dethman put the Red Hawks up 13-5. The Red Hawks led 16-10 at the end of the period.
Four straight points by C. Miller and a three-pointer by Dethman increased the Red Hawks’ advantage to 23-16 in the second quarter.
The Red Hawks led 27-20 until the Spartans responded with the last eight points of the half including a three-pointer by Fishell to lift the Spartans up to 28-27 at the half.
Four three-pointers by Jayce Tande led the Spartans to a 40-30 advantage midway into the third quarter.
After two drives by Nesbit, Scobey’s Fishell accounted for the last five points of the third quarter for a 45-34 margin.
The Red Hawks bounced back with five points on a hoop by Wivholm and a three-pointer by Nesbit to open the fourth quarter. The free-throw shooting of Fishell helped the Spartans to extend their advantage to 10 points.
Froid/Lake’s top scorers were C. Miller with 19 and Nesbit with 18. Also scoring were Dethman with eight, Wivholm with seven and Bode Miller with two.
