MHSA Selects Tournament Sites

The Montana High School Association executive board approved sites for this winter’s post-season extra-curricular competitions during a meeting on Thursday, Jan. 28.

State wrestling meets are planned for March 5-6 with Class A in Miles City and Class B/C in Shelby. The first all-girls’ state wrestling meet will take place Feb. 19-20 at Lockwood High School in Billings. Sidney also made a bid for the Class A meet.

There will be a maximum of four tickets per wrestler at the state competitions.

MHSA executive director Mark Beckman said each bid needed to include approval by the county’s health department, provide adequate hotels/ restaurants and be a zero bid.

The Eastern B/C wrestling divisional meet will be held in Glasgow and the Eastern A divisional meet is scheduled in Sidney.

State basketball sites will include Butte for Class A, Billings’ Metra for Class B and MSU Bozeman for Class C.

Tournaments will feature two teams playing and two teams waiting for the next contest. Fans are allowed to attend only their teams’ games. Fan limits are 25 percent of a facility’s capacity. No team can have more than 500 fans at the larger sites.

Officials noted that are 169 girls taking part in wrestling this winter. There are 48 schools with girls’ wrestling, and 42 of those schools have five wrestlers or less. Additional weight classes approved at the meeting were 120, 132 and 145 pounds. The other established weight classes are 103, 113, 126, 138, 152, 170 and 205.

The plan is for the all-girls meet will be held in conjunction will the all-class meet next winter.

As far as district music festivals, the executive board approved a plan to have virtually performances held in April. Only comments, rather than ratings, will be given by judges. There will not be any state music festivals.
