Wolf Point’s quickness was the difference as the Wolves downed Poplar, 61-41, in girls’ basketball play on Saturday, Feb. 6.

Ahead by a 43-35 margin, the Wolves ended the third quarter on a basket by Jaylee Azure, after a steal by Josie Kolstad, and a drive by Hamyanie Campbell for a 47-35 advantage.

Campbell, who finished with 23 points, opened the fourth quarter with a layup as the Wolves struck for the first eight points of the period. Two more baskets by Campbell and a hoop by Azure increased the margin to 53-35 with 5:47 remaining.

Poplar’s 6-2 senior Macey Dionne hit a 15-footer to end Wolf Point’s string of points.

Wolf Point responded with the next six points on a baseline shot by Jodi Houg, two free throws by J’Elle Garfield and a basket by Sierra Hamilton for a 61-37 advantage with only 1:11 left.

Along with Campbell’s 23 points, Azure also reached double figures with 14 points.

Rounding out Wolf Point’s scoring were Kolstad with eight, Garfield with six, Hamilton with four, Hailey Nelson with four and Houg with two.

Keandra Martell scored 16 points to lead the Indians.

Also scoring for Poplar were Jazmyn CarryWater with seven, Dionne with six, Teagan Escarcega with four, Gracelyn Medicine Cloud with three, Morgen Nordwick with two and Dusti Marottek with two.

Five points by CarryWater, including a three-pointer, put the Indians up 5-3 early, but Wolf Point ran off the next six points on a three-point play by Campbell, a free throw by Kolstad and a drive by Nelson.

The scoring of Martell and Marottek put the Indians back ahead. Three-pointers by Escarcega and Medicine Cloud produced a 17-13 lead.

A drive by Campbell and a 14-footer by Kolstad pulled the Wolves to 17-17 at the end of the opening quarter.

Wolf Point gained control with the first seven points of the second period on five points by Azure and a layup by Campbell.

The Wolves by as many as 10 points in the second quarter. A hoop by Dionne cut the margin to 31-23 at intermission.

After Wolf Point took a 39-27 advantage, the Indians fought back on a basket by Dionne, a three-pointer by Martell and a free throw by Escarcega to trail only 39-33.

The Wolves responded for the last eight points of the quarter on four points by Azure along with baskets by Nelson and Campbell.

Wolf Point will travel to Glendive on Thursday, Feb. 11, and host Scobey on Saturday, Feb. 13.
