Froid/Lake Girls Place Second
The Froid/Lake girls’ basketball team couldn’t get its offense going as the Red Hawks fell to Plentywood, 42-24, in the District 2C tournament’s championship game on Friday, Feb. 19.
The Red Hawks trailed by an 8-2 margin early, but Mara Salvevold scored off an assist from Dasani Nesbit late in the opening quarter. A basket by Ashtyn Curtiss put Plentywood ahead 10-4 to end the quarter.
Three-pointers by Curtiss helped the Wildcats gain an 18-8 advantage to end the second period.
The Red Hawks enjoyed a strong start to the third quarter. A drive by Nesbit opened the third quarter. After Plentywood’s Annie Kaul hit a 14-footer, Nesbit scored on a rebound and drive. A three-pointer by Baylee Davidson pulled the Red Hawks to 20-15 with 5:51 left in the period.
Plentywood struck for the next four points, but Davidson hit a short jumper to keep Froid/Lake close. A three-pointer by Emma Brensdal increased Plentywood’s lead to 27-17 to end the quarter.
Liv Wangerin connected on a three-pointer to open the fourth quarter for the Wildcats. After Nesbit scored for a 30-19 margin, Plentywood accounted for the next seven points for a 37-19 advantage.
Nesbit then made a 12-footer, but Plentywood scored on a drive by Curtiss and two free throws by Wangerin for a 41-21 lead with only 1:12 remaining.
Nesbit finished with 12 points. Also scoring were Davidson with five, Dethman with four and Salvevold with two.
Leading Plentywood were Curtiss with 14, Wangerin with 11 and Brendal with nine points.
