Froid/Lake Posts Semi-Final Victory

The Froid/Lake Red Hawks gained the upper-hand in the second quarter en route to a 63-46 semi-final round win over Richey/Lambert on Thursday, Feb. 18.

Down by a 16-15 margin early in the second quarter, the Red Hawks held the Fusion scoreless the rest of the half for a 29-16 advantage.

A basket by Tyler Wivholm off a pass from Colt Miller started the streak. Mason Dethman then accounted for a three-point play at the 4:12 mark. Another basket by Wivholm put the margin at 22-16.

A crowd-pleasing dunk and a drive by Dethman increased the gap to 26-16. Brent Stentoft ended the half’s scoring with a three-pointer.

The Fusion, behind the scoring of 6-4 senior Caleb Senner, didn’t back down in the third quarter and pulled to 35-31 midway into the period.

Froid/Lake responded with baskets by Javonne Nesbit and Wivholm for a 39-31 lead. Another hoop by Nesbit put the margin at 41-33 at the end of the third quarter.

After Senner hit a pull-up jumper to open the fourth quarter, the Red Hawks ran off seven of the next nine points on two drives by Nesbit and a three-pointer by Colt Miller.

Ahead by a 48-40 margin, Froid/Lake put the contest away with the next nine points on six points by Nesbit, two free throws by C. Miller and a free throw by Bode Miller.

Nesbit led the Red Hawks with 25 points. Others reaching double figures were C. Miller with 14 and Dethman with 11. Also scoring were Wivholm with nine, Stentoft with three and B. Miller with one.

Top scorers for the Fusion were Senner with 12, Grady Gonsioroski with 11 and Toby Clinton with 10.

The Red Hawks opened the game with the first seven points, but Richey/Lambert fought back for a 13-13 deadlock at the end of the first quarter.
