Cowgirls Handle Fusion For Victory
The sophomore combination of Megan Granbois and Makena Hauge was too much for the Richey/Lambert Fusion to handle as Culbertson’s girls won by a 62-34 margin at the District 2C basketball tournament on Wednesday, Feb. 17.
Granbois scored 32 points and Hauge accounted for 23 points in the loser-out contest.
The Cowgirls trailed 9-8 in the first quarter before two straight baskets by Granbois. A free throw by Hauge put Culbertson up by a 13-9 margin. The Fusion’s Isabelle Fatzinger hit two free throws to cut the gap to 13-11 at the end of the opening quarter.
After Granbois led the Cowgirls to a 19-11 advantage, freshman Brie Mullin sank two free tosses for Richey/Lambert. The Cowgirls then broke away with seven straight points on a three-pointer by Hauge, a turnaround shot by Granbois and a layup by Destiney Thompson after a steal by Hauge. Culbertson held a 26-15 half-time advantage.
Consecutive three-pointers by Hauge produced a 32-17 lead for Culbertson early in the third quarter. A hoop by Granbois and a drive by Hauge increased the gap to 36-20.
The Fusion scored on two three-pointers by Jaylyn Klempel, but four straight points by Granbois ended the third quarter at 44-24.
Culbertson’s Hauge opened the fourth quarter with a three-pointer. Granbois then hit two free throws for a 49-24 advantage en route to the 28-point victory.
Also scoring for the Cowgirls were Thompson with four, Alicyn Ator with two and Perla Berciaga with one.
Leading the Fusion were ShaeLyn Williams with 14 and Klempel with 11 points.
