A change in defense played a key role as Froid/Lake’s girls stopped MonDak, 33-25, in the semi-final round of the District 2C tournament in Sidney on Wednesday, Feb. 17.

Ahead by a 20-17 half-time score, the Red Hawks utilized a 2-3 extended zone to keep MonDak from scoring in the third quarter. The result was a 29-17 advantage at the end of the period.

Sydney Dethman accounted for the first points of the third quarter when she connected on a three-pointer with 5:19 left in the quarter.

After Carolyne Christoffersen scored inside, Meg Ator scored off a steal by Baylee Davidson for a 27-17 lead.

Another basket by Christoffersen put the margin at 29-17 to end the quarter.

The Thunder scored their first points of the second half when Sayler Stewart scored off a rebound with 4:30 remaining in the contest.

A three-pointer by Elizabeth Field pulled MonDak to 29-22 with 2:21 left.

After a pair of free throws by Ator, Field hit another three-pointer to close the margin to 31-25 with 25 seconds remaining. Ator then made two more free throws for the 33-25 final.

Top scorers for the Red Hawks were Dasani Nesbit with nine and Dethman with eight points. Also scoring were Ator with six, Christoffersen with six, Davidson with two and Mara Salvevold with two.

Leading MonDak were Brynn Folvag with eight and Field with seven.

Down by a 7-6 score in the first quarter, Froid/Lake moved ahead on a threepoint play by Dethman. The Thunder tallied the last three points of the quarter on a free throw by Kiarra Brunelle and a layup by Emma Smart for a 10-9 lead.

A 12-footer by Christoffersen and a drive by Dethman put the Red Hawks up 15-13 in the second quarter. A three-point play by Nesbit produced an 18-13 advantage.

MonDak pulled to 18-17 on a three-pointer by Olivia Christian and a free throw by Field. Nesbit hit a pull-up jumper for a 20-17 half-time advantage.
