Indian Education Committee Raises Funds
Johnson-O’Malley program coordinator Keri Hauenstein told the
Community News that the Indian Education Committee raised $1,056 at the Culbertson High School basketball games Saturday, Jan. 25.
Prizes were donated by IEC members, family and friends, as well as merchants in Culbertson and Sidney.
IEC funding allows JOM organizers to direct funds to outreach and education efforts otherwise restricted by JOM guidelines.
The committee is currently seeking prospective members to attend an upcoming meeting at the CHS lunchroom Feb. 5 at 5:45 p.m. Membership is offered to parents or guardians of Native American youth in the area.
The JOM program is authorized by the Johnson-O’Malley Act of 1934. As amended, the act authorizes contracts for the education of eligible Indian students enrolled in public schools and previously private schools. Programs offered to American Indian and Alaska Native students vary and may include such programs as culture, language, academics and dropout prevention.
