Manhattan Christian Outscores Froid/Lake


The Froid/Lake Red Hawks battled the distance against traditional state powerhouse Manhattan Christian before falling short, 56-51, at the state boys’ basketball tournament in Billings on Saturday, March 13.
The Red Hawks trailed by a 23-20 half-time margin and a 31-24 score midway into the third quarter before roaring back with the last nine points of the period.
Javonne Nesbit started the rally with two free throws with 3:26 left in the quarter. A three-pointer by Tyler Wivholm pulled Froid/Lake to 31-29.
A steal and layup by Nesbit tied the game with a minute left in the third quarter. A basket by Wivholm off a pass from Brett Stentoft put the Red Hawks in the lead to end the quarter to the delight of the strong Red Hawk fan support at the contest.
Froid/Lake’s final lead of the game came on a three-pointer by Mason Dethman to put the score at 36-33 with 7:06 remaining.
The Eagles then ran off the next 12 points for a 45-36 advantage with 3:34 left.
Froid/Lake pulled to 45-42 on two free throws by Nesbit and a three-pointer by Dethman. Manhattan Christian’s Caidin Hill then hit three free throws, and the Red Hawks missed on a couple of scoring changes. Two free throws by Nesbit and a free toss by Issac Johnson cut the gap to 48-44 with 53 seconds left. The Red Hawks couldn’t get any closer.
Top scorers for the Red Hawks were Nesbit with 18, Wivholm with 14 and Dethman with 10 points. Also scoring were Colt Miller with three, Ashdyn Hobbs with three, Bode Miller with two and Johnson with one.
C. Miller led the team with eight rebounds.
Leading the Eagles were Seth Amunrud with 16, Hill with 15 and Jackson Leep with 10 points. Willem Kimm, a 6-6 junior, grabbed 16 rebounds.
The Red Hawks jumped out to an 8-0 lead on three-pointers by Wivholm and Nesbit along with a drive by Dethman.
Manhattan Christian led 14-8 at the end of the opening quarter.
Three-pointers by C. Miller and Hobbs highlighted the second quarter for the Red Hawks as they trailed by only a 23-20 margin at the half.
