Roosevelt Ranked Most Diversified County In State
Roosevelt County is the most diversified county in Montana, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
The county has a score of 56 percent to top the 2020 rankings. Blaine County is second at 55.9 percent.
The diversity index measures the probability that two people chosen at random will be from different race and ethnicity groups. The score is bounded between 0 and 1 with 0 meaning that everyone in the population has the same racial and ethnic characteristics. A value close to 1 indicates that everyone in the population has different racial and ethnic characteristics.
The bureau converted the probabilities into percentages to make them easier to interpret. The diversity index tells us the chance that two people selected at random will be from different racial and ethnic groups, which is a 61.1 percent chance in the United States for 2020.
According to the census, Roosevelt County has 57 percent of people who are either American Native or Alaska Native alone. The county has 33.2 percent of individuals who are white alone. A total of 6.6 percent of individuals are two or more races.
Based on the 2010 census, Roosevelt County was third at 51.6 percent. Blaine County was first at 53.7 percent.
As a state, Montana has a diversity index of 30.1 percent in 2020.
Other counties in the top five for 2020 were Rosebud at 54.8, Lake at 51.8, Big Horn at 49.7 and Glacier at 49.7.
The bottom five counties were Garfield at 8 percent, Carter at 10, Liberty at 10.1, Petroleum at 11.5 and Fallon at 12.
Marks for other northeastern Montana counties include Phillips at 30.4 percent, Valley at 28.7, Richland at 25.3, Daniels at 21.5 and Sheridan at 19.4.
