County Keeps Battling With COVID Cases County Keeps Battling With COVID Cases

Roosevelt County, like the rest of the state, continues to attempt to keep the number of COVID cases in check.

As of late last week, the state reported that Roosevelt County had 26 cases.

That figure is lower than some other Eastern Montana counties including Valley with 41, Richland with 71, Dawson with 33, Custer with 179 and Hill with 166.

“I’m happy that once we reached the level where we’re at, we have stabilized,” Roosevelt County Health Department director Patty Presser said.

She, however, is disappointed that the county’s vaccination rate isn’t higher at this point. Only 41 percent of Roosevelt County residents are fully vaccinated. For the entire state, 52 percent of residents are fully vaccinated.

“Vaccination is the number one protection,” Presser said.

Since the county’s first case on March 19, 2020, Roosevelt County has 619 cases. That doesn’t include Indian Health Services’ cases. The county’s first COVID-related death occurred on Aug. 16, 2020.

There have been 1,824 total reported cases for Roosevelt County and the Fort Peck Reservation including Frazer combined.

Presser noted that those are just reported cases and not all the cases that area residents have experienced.

There have been two breakthrough cases reported. Breakthrough cases are individuals that have suffered with COVID more than one time.

Montana had 10,842 active cases at the end of last week. There were 401 active hospitalizations at that time. Counties with the most cases include Yellowstone with 2,461, Missoula with 1,274, Cascade with 1,236 and Flathead with 1,046 active cases.

North Dakota, meanwhile, listed 3,495 positive cases at the end last week. Western North Dakota counties included Williams with 136 cases and McKenzie with 63 cases.
