Matthew “Matt” Paul Black Eagle, 58, died Oct. 10, 2021, at Trinity Hospital in Wolf Point.

He was born Sept. 12, 1963, to Donna (Hopkins) and Thomas Black Eagle in Glasgow. He grew up in the Nashua/Wolf Point area and attended Nashua elementary and high school. He was a member of the Red Bottom Clan and enrolled member of the Fort Belknap Reservation.

He was a kindhearted, loving man, a one-of-a-kind soul, with many miles under his feet. He was a man with many talents — from fishing, hunting, construction work, powwow trails, singing with drum groups, sharing his stories and being a helping hand for his people, to name a few.

He held many jobs throughout the years. In the ‘80s and early ‘90s, he fought fires. In ‘93, he worked in Alaska on processing boats and, for a short period of time, he owned his own business, Black Eagle Construction.

On Oct. 8, 1988, he was united in marriage with Alison Mann. They resided in Wolf Point and, together, they had four children, Jory, Tal’on, Coy and Mattia. A few years down the road, he met Sophie Andersin and they had four children, Thunder, Theaira, Acacia and Samantha.

One of the most memorable things about him is he always had a story to tell. He also had a love for rocks and it meant the world to him to gift specific rocks he picked out.

He is survived by his children, Tal’on, Coy and Mattia Black Eagle, all of Wolf Point, Brittany Black Eagle of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Thunder, Theaira, Acacia and Samantha Black Eagle, all of Poplar; four grandchildren; brothers, Tom Black Eagle of Wolf Point and Mark Black Eagle of Billings; and sister, Kimberly Black Eagle of Wolf Point.

He was preceded in death by his son, Jory Black Eagle; one granddaughter, Neveah Black Eagle; brothers, Gary and Cordell Black Eagle; and sisters, Brenda Hopkins and Maralene Clancy.

Services are pending under the direction of Clayton Stevenson Memorial Chapel of Wolf Point.
