Red Hawks Upset Bridger In First Round Of State Tourney
Bridger entered the firstround match of the Class C state volleyball tournament as the defending state champion. Froid/Lake, meanwhile, was making its first appearance at state as a co-op and Medicine Lake didn’t qualify since 1991.
After the favored Scouts won the opening two sets, Froid/Lake bounced back for an incredible 18-25, 19-25, 25-20, 25-19, 17-15, victory on Thursday, Nov. 11.
With the odds greatly against them, the Red Hawks opened the third set by taking a 4-1 lead on the serving of Baylee Davidson along with the attacks of Dasani Nesbit and Carolyne Christoffersen. Kills by Christoffersen, Jaeleigh Davidson and Mara Salvevold led the way to a 12-6 advantage.
After an ace by Aleah Johnson put the margin at 19-11, a spike and ace by Nesbit increased the gap to 21-12. A block by Christoffersen produced a 24-15 lead.
The Scouts battled back to 24-20 before the Red Hawks ended the third set on a kill by Salvevold.
The net play of Christoffersen put the Red Hawks up 10-7 in the fourth set and tips by B. Davidson increased the margin to 14-19.
Froid/Lake led by only a 1917 score until Nesbit accounted for a kill and Christoffersen followed with a block. Two kills by Christoffersen put the Red Hawks up 23-19 en route to a 25-19 win.
In the fifth and deciding set, the Red Hawks tied the score at 6-6 and 7-7 on kills by Salvevold and Christoffersen. Froid/Lake fell behind 11-8, but three net winners by Nesbit and a block by Christoffersen tied the set at 12-12.
The Red Hawks faced match points at 14-12, but Froid/Lake fought back on a kill by Christoffersen and a block by Salvevold for a 14-14 deadlock.
Even at 15-15, the Red Hawks won the match on a kill by Christoffersen and a tip by B. Davidson.
Christoffersen led the Red Hawks with 19 kills and 10 blocks. Johnson accounted for 10 digs.
Meg Ator finished with 15 assists.
Serving aces were Ator, Nesbit, Johnson, B. Davidson and Christoffersen.
Mya Goltz led the Scouts with four aces and 20 kills.
