Wolf Point High School senior Abel Garfield is a very productive student.

He excels in the school’s industrial arts department especially when it comes to woodworking projects.

His recent work has included a gun rack. He has also been wood burning a U.S. Marine corps symbol to help a friend with a project.

“I’ve been working on it for three days, and I’m not even half done,” Garfield said last week.

A completed project was a little bench made for his mother.

“But it just sits in the hall and collects shoes,” Garfield laughed.

He has recently began welding work under the guidance of teacher Martin Toavs.

“I’ve just started it,” Garfield said. “I’m getting the hang of it.”

He plans to attend trade school after graduating from high school. A welding career is a possibility.

A highlight of his high school career was earning state honors by singing a solo during his freshman year. He said he sang an old folk song for the honor.

“I still sing a lot on my own time,” Garfield said.

As far as sports, Garfield is a strong member on Wolf Point’s golf squad. He just missed qualifying for the state meet last season.

His goal is to qualify for the state tournament this upcoming campaign.

“I like golf for getting a work out, walking all over,” Garfield said. “I’ve made quite a few friends.” He added that he has met friends from schools such as Malta, Glasgow and Shelby.

Painting is another hobby for the senior.

“Almost anything that’s art, I like and try to pick up,” Garfield said.

His favorite classes are woodworking and welding.

Garfield’s favorite teacher is Douglas Evans.

“He’s very open minded and gives it to you straight,” Garfield said.

After school, Garfield makes deliveries and performs customer service at the local NAPA store run by his parents.

He says he likes the small town atmosphere of Wolf Point.

“I plan on getting out of here, but at the same time I want to come back,” Garfield said.
