Wrestlers Prepare For Divisional

Wolf Point’s wrestlers finished their regular season at two difference locations this weekend.
Coach Maestro Martinez and Joli Beston traveled to Cascade and Simms for some matches. Beston went 4-1 on the weekend. In Cascade, she wrestled four girls from Flathead.
“We were looking for three match-ups. We got these instead which was fine,” Wolf Point Coach Scott Vandall said. “She pined three of them. She made one little mistake against one whom she was beating. She got caught with her arm up where it shouldn’t been and got put on her back. She was winning the match and that’s how it goes.”
The coach added, “She wrestled very well on Thursday. She stayed in control of all of her matches. Just that one little mistake cost her.”
On Friday, Beston wrestled in Simms. She got a match up with a girl from Shelby. Beston controlled that match and won without any difficulty. “Coach Martinez was happy with her matches. We both feel she wrestled great. She will be getting ready for the All Class State matches these next two weeks,” Vandall said. “She’s hitting her stride right now, just in time and she will be ready. She is looking to improvement last year’s state placement. We hope to bring home that big bracket. We got a good shot to do that. Joli is really focused and taking in all we tell her. I can’t wait to see what happens.”
The boys were in Malta to end their season. Jordan Davis wrestled at 160 and did well. He lost his first match to a Malta wrestler. “Jordan was in on a couple of good shots. just couldn’t get it done. He lost that match, but he was the aggressor of the match,” Vandall said. “That’s what we want out of him.”
Davis won his consolation semi-final match. “He was matched up with a Harlem kid who we were 1-1 with. Unfortunately the Harlem kid hurt his shoulder earlier in the year and hurt it again. He had to forfeit the match,” Vandall said. “We hope it is OK to wrestle next week at divisional.”
For third and fourth place, Davis wrestled a Cut Bank wrestler. “Again we were the aggressor. We lost the match, but we have seen a lot of improvement from Jordan,” Vandall said. “He finished fourth. Jordan has come a long ways this year. He is really quick. I feel he is a dark horse of the team for this next weekend at divisional. The top eight will go. I think we can get there.”
Chance Smith, at 205 pounds, wrestled a wrestler from CJI that he have seen a few times this year. “Chance went out and just put it to him. The match was like 14-3 before Chance got the fall,” Vandall said. “He then faced the number one ranked kid In the state from Glasgow. That wasn’t our beat match, he lost that match. Then he wrestled another match against a Havre kid. We lost, Missing placement by one match. I was proud of Chance, he was feeling under the weather. But still went forward.”
Vandall says Smith has a good shot at qualifying for state. “If he wrestles the way he did that first match, he won’t have a problem. I feel he can make it. He just need to fix a couple little things,” Vandall said.
Mason Garfield also wrestled at 205 pounds this weekend. Garfield beat a wrestler from Havre in the first match by fall. Then Garfield defeated a wrestler from Fort Benton in the semis and lost to Glasgow in the finals.
“Mason too is battling a little cold right now. The finals match was 0-0 going into the second period. We got caught pushing too hard on our feet and got tossed with a really nice throw,” Vandall said. “Mason is ranked third in the state. We still believe that we can get it done and get to the finals at state. First we need to get through divisional. The top three in the state will be there. It will be a barn burner.”
The Wolves head to Colstrip this weekend for divisional. “This is when it matters the most. We see what happens and hoping to have three boys going to state,” Vandall said.
