Wolf Point didn’t have its best shooting night, but the Wolves managed to knock off Sidney, 59-48, during home boys’ basketball action on Thursday, Jan. 28.

The Wolves led by only a 29-26 half-time margin, but baskets by Jack Sprague and Juliun Benson got them off to a good start in the third quarter. After Sidney’s Aren Larson scored to cut the gap to 33-28 with 4:21 left in the period, the Wolves ran off the next four points on a basket by Benson off a pass from Jaxon Azure and a hoop by Corey Martell on an assist from Kraven Silk.

A three-pointer by Jerome Entz kept the Eagles within striking distance at 37-31 to end the quarter. Entz then opened the fourth quarter with a pull-up jumper for a 37-33 game.

The Wolves, however, gained control with the contest’s next eight points as Kelby Bauer hit a 14-footer and two free throws, Silk accounted for a steal and layup and Martell sank a pair of free throws.

After Sidney’s Austen Taylor made two free throws, the Wolves struck on two free tosses by Bauer and a three-pointer by Martell for a comfortable 50-35 advantage with 2:54 left.

With the score at 51-39, Wolf Point accounted for five of the next eight points on three points by Peyton Summers along with a steal and drive by Martell for a 56-43 lead with only 1:27 remaining. Wolf Point’s top scorers were Silk with 13, Martell with 11 and Benson with nine. Also scoring were Bauer with seven, Azure with seven, Summers with five, Sprague with five and Shastin Damon with two.

Entz scored 21 points for the Eagles. Rounding out the scoring were Austen Taylor with eight, Larson with five, Chase Waters with four, Ty Lovegren with four, Brayton DiFonzo with two and Bradyn Page with two.

The three-point shooting of Benson and Silk led the Wolves to a 17-9 advantage during the first quarter.

After Sidney’s Lovegren hit a free throw, Wolf Point tallied the last six points of the quarter on baskets by Martell, Sprague and Azure for a 23-10 lead.

The Eagles put together a 7-0 run in the second quarter to close the gap to 24-17. A drive by DiFonzo tied the game at 26-26 with 1:05 left in the half, but Silk connected on a three-pointer to put the Wolves ahead at the half.
