Wolf Point’s boys’ basketball team overcame a slow start and emerged with a 58-50 home win over Baker on Friday, Feb. 4.

The Wolves trailed 15-11 at the end of the first quarter and for almost the entire second quarter. Down 29-23, Wolf Point scored the final six points of the half on a three-pointer by Gaige Bushman and a three-pointer at the buzzer by Kraven Silk that went off the backboard and in for a 29-29 deadlock.

Two drives by Silk put the Wolves up 35-31 margin into the third quarter.

After Baker’s Bryant O’Connor hit two free throws, Wolf Point’s junior Corey Martell accounted for the contest’s next seven points for a 42-35 advantage.

A free throw by Cooper O’Connor cut the gap to 42-36 at the end of the third quarter. Baker then battled as close as 44-42 with 4:42 left.

The Wolves gained breathing room when Juliun Benson connected on a three-pointer with 4:27 left. Two free throws by Benson put the margin at 49-42.

After the Spartans fought back to 49-46, a free throw by Martell and a three-pointer by Silk increased the lead to 54-46. A basket by Martell off a nice pass from Silk gave the Wolves a 56-48 lead with only 1:48 to play.

Leading the Wolves were Martell with 16, Benson with 10 and Silk with 10 points.

Bushman finished with eight points. Adding four points each were Kelby Bauer, Jaxon Azure and Jack Sprague. Ethan Blount scored two points.

Top scorers for Baker were Bryant O’Connor with 16, Cooper O’Connor with 12 and Garrett Lesh with eight points.
