Aug. 26, 2018, Garcia beat the victim, identified as Jane Doe, after an argument over the phone with a relative of the victim. The victim suffered serious bodily injuries.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Jared C. Cobell prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Fort Peck Tribes Department of Law and Justice. Chief U.S. District Judge Brian M. Morris presided over the case.
