Cowboys Lose At Buzzer In First Round

The Culbertson Cowboys lost a heart-breaker in the first round of the District 2C basketball tournament when MonDak’s Erik Field hit a 30-footer at the buzzer to give the Thunder a 47-44 victory on Monday, Feb. 14.

Culbertson trailed by a 34-29 margin entering the final period, but the Cowboys put together a great comeback during the last minute of action.

A free throw by Maurice Bighorn pulled the Cowboys to 43-42 with 12 seconds remaining. MonDak’s Field then hit a free toss for a 44-42 score with nine seconds remaining.

Culbertson tied the contest at 44-44 when Colin Avance connected on two free throws with 3.6 seconds on the clock.

Top scorers for the Cowboys were Avance with 15, M. Bighorn with 11 and Isaiah Bighorn with 11 points.

Also scoring were Payton Perkins with five and James Kirkaldie with two points.

Field led the Thunder with 20 points. Carson Solberg scored nine and Ledger Pulvemacher added seven points.

MonDak gained a 21-10 lead in the first quarter, but Culbertson fought back to 26-21 at the half.
