Cowboys Capture League Victory Over MonDak


At the end, a defensive play was the difference as Culbertson fought off MonDak, 28-26, in home boys’ basketball play on Saturday, Jan. 29.
The visiting Thunder had the ball with the District 2C game deadlocked at 24-24, but Culbertson’s Maurice Bighorn then accounted for a steal and layup to put the Cowboys ahead to stay with 1:38 left.
After MonDak missed its next shot attempt, Culbertson’s Isaiah Bighorn hit two free throws for a 28-24 lead with 33 seconds left.
The Cowboys’ defense stopped the Thunder until Erik Field made a basket with only two seconds left. The Thunder were able to get off another shot after that.
Colin Avance and I. Bighorn led the Cowboys with eight points in the victory. Also scoring were M. Bighorn with four, Payton Perkins with four, James Kirkaldie with two and Bridger Salvevold with two.
Field and Cole Gebhardt scored six points each for MonDak.
MonDak held a 5-4 lead after the first quarter and increased the gap to 10-6 when Field hit a free throw with 5:09 remaining in the half.
The Cowboys responded with the next six points on two baskets by Avance and a drive by Perkins for a 12-10 half-time advantage.
Two three-pointers by I. Bighorn lifted Culbertson to an 18-12 lead during the first two minutes of the third quarter. A three-pointer by Gebhardt and a steal by Field helped Mon-Dak cut the margin to 22-21 at the end of the period.
A three-pointer by Mon-Dak’s Carson Solberg tied the game at 24-24 with 3:15 remaining.
The Cowboys will host Froid/Lake on Friday, Feb. 4, and Richey/Lambert on Saturday, Feb. 5.
