Red Hawks Win District Boys’ Basketball Championship

The Froid/Medicine Lake Red Hawks were impressive in winning the District 2C boys’ basketball tournament in Sidney during the weekend.
Froid/Lake defeated Fairview by a 66-41 final in the championship game on Saturday, Feb. 19. “They played well this weekend,” Froid/Lake Coach Josh Stentoft said. “Fairview slowed it down, but they are a good team. They played smart.”
The coach credits Javonne Nesbit and Brett Stentoft for putting together solid efforts against Fairview.
Another positive was the increased playing time by Bode Miller as he returns to action from an injury.
“He’s 100 percent. He’s just getting back in game shape,” Coach Stentoft said. “It’s a big lift. It makes us even deeper.”
After leading by a 32-23 half-time margin against Fairview, the Red Hawks took control by running off 10 straight points in the third quarter.
A drive by Nesbit, a three-pointer by Tyler Wivholm and a layup by Nesbit after a steal by Mason Dethman put Froid/Lake up by a 41-25 margin.
Nesbit then connected on a three-pointer for a 44-25 advantage.
Froid/Lake’s largest lead of the quarter was 50-30. The quarter ended with the Red Hawks ahead by a 52-33 margin. Nesbit scored 13 points in the period.
Top scorers for the Red Hawks were Nesbit with 23, Wivholm with 14 and Stentoft with 10 points. Also scoring were Dethman with nine, Patton Bighorn with six, Miller with two and Connor Huft with two points.
Nesbit finished with eight rebounds and six assists.
Hunter Sharbono scored 19 points to lead the Warriors. Kanyon Taylor added eight points.
Froid/Lake’s first game at the Eastern C divisional tournament will be at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 2, in Sidney.
