Just when it looked like Poplar’s boys’ basketball team might be in trouble, the Indians’ long-range shooting ability came through for a 58-54 win over Glasgow in the opening round of the district tournament.

After Poplar held a 47-36 lead at the end of the third quarter, the Scotties pulled to 49-47 on a three-point play by Riley Smith with 5:53 remaining.

The Indians were able to stay ahead on a three-pointer by Joe Bear, but Glasgow reeled off the next seven points including an inside shot by Smith to take a 54-42 advantage with 2:54 remaining.

Poplar, however, regained the lead on a three-pointer by sophomore Delray Lilley with 2:04 left.

After the Scotties missed shots, Bear fired in another three-pointer to put the Indians up 58-54 with 1:24 remaining.

The Scotties then committed a turnover and missed three-point tries, and Poplar closed out the game.

Reaching double figures for the Indians were Geordy Medicine Cloud with 13, Lilley with 12, Bear with 10 and Malcom Yellow Hammer with 10 points.

Also scoring were Dennis Red Eagle with eight, Kaniel Ricker with three and Preston Ogle with two points.

Top scorers for Glasgow were Smith with 22 and Keigan Ingram with 13 points.

The first half ended in a 29-- 29 deadlock, but Poplar took a 39-34 lead on baskets by Red Eagle and Lilley.

Bear then connected for five straight points to put the margin at 44-34. A three-pointer by Ricker increased Poplar’s lead to 47-36 at the end of the third quarter.
